10 Best Winter Wellness Tips and Hacks using Essential Oils

That dreaded season is almost upon us again, you know the one, it’s full of snot, coughs, whining kids and days off work looking after everyone else. But not this year! This year I am well prepared and armed with amazing defences.

2 years ago my 6 year old daughter had 25 days off school in one year due to a multitude of basic ailments. 25 days! Last year (now 8 years old) after introducing essential oils into our daily wellness support she had only 5 days off school (and 2 of those we were on a holiday so they don’t really count right?!)

I am going to share with you my 10 Best Winter Wellness Tips and Hacks. All of the below are made using doTERRA’s pure CTPG Essential Oils and blends and fractioned coconut oil plus a few other regular household products like raw honey.

  1. Top of the list, my absolute MUST HAVE is the Immune Support Roller. Also known as F.L.O.O.T. To make this, in a 10 ml roller add the following: 10 drops of Frankincense, 15 drops of Lemon, 10 drops of OnGuard, 10 drops of Oregano and finally 10 drops of Tea Tree. Top with Fractionated Coconut oil and you are good to go. Use hourly at the first symptom of a compromised immune system. I like to roll directly onto either my throat, back of my neck, up and down spine or on the bottom of my feet. Where ever you feel the most comfortable. This roller has seriously changed our lives. I have one at home, one in my hand bag and one at work at all times.

  2. Apply diluted Manuka Oil topically to the outside of your throat when required. Works a treat!

  3. Make a Sinus Steamer: carefully pour boiling water in a large bowl then add 5 drops of Easy Air Essential Oil blend. Cover your head with a tea towel and place your head over the bowl to breath in the steam. Be careful to close your eyes.

  4. Digestzen is the tummy support blend created for you by doTERRA. It is absolutely amazing and many people swear by it. Make up a 10 ml roller by adding 20 drops of Digestzen and top with fractionated coconut oil . As well as rolling onto my tummy when needed, my favourite hack is to roll the diluted Digestzen directly across my sinuses and down the bridge of my nose. you will be amazed how quickly it works to clear blocked sinuses.

  5. Anyone affected by pollen and grasses? Place one drop each of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint essential oil onto your palm, rub your hands together and take 4 or 5 big sniffs. It incredible and works quickly.

  6. Immune Elixer - this is made using the same F.L.O.O.T. immune support oils but in a tiny dilution so you can take it orally. Mix 1 tablespoon of raw or Manuka honey with 1 tablespoon of hard coconut oil in a small glass jar. Add just one drop each of Frankincense, Lemon, Oregano, Onguard and Tea Tree, mix thoroughly and take one teaspoon at a time when needed. Can also be made into a tea by placing a tea spoon in boiled water.

  7. Take a drop of Copaiba and Frankincense under your tongue for daily immune support

  8. Keep a bottle of the doTERRA Onguard Sanitizing mist in your handbag for hand washing and spraying down highchairs in restaurants, park benches, door knobs etc

  9. Diffuse Onguard daily in the house and in the kids rooms at night. Add Easy Air if needed or Lavender or Cedarwood for sleep support

  10. Use the Onguard toothpaste daily for another hit on Onguard in your day.

Most of the above tips are made using the top 10 oils that come in the enroiment kits. The kits are perfectly curated so you can get the very best out of your purchase. You can learn more about the kits here. The additional oils I have use are Copaiba and Manuka. You can purchase the fractioned coconut oil from the doTERRA website and I like to purchase my 10 ml rollers from the USA doTERRA website you will find them in the DIY accessories section but if you are not doing a US order anytime soon you can also purchase them in Australia from Oils for Life Australia or Centaur Packaging.

Come along to our Workshops, all welcome!

We love a good Workshop! We are so passionate about our Essential Oils we could talk all day - but we don’t , our workshops generally run from 90 mins to two hours.

We know everyone has different interests so we love to cover different topics and are held mostly at the West Moonah Community House but we also have some in Launceston and Adelaide.

Our Essential Oils 101 workshop is perfect for beginners who know little to nothing about Essential Oils or for someone whom has recently received their first gorgeous bottle of oil and would love to know all the ways you can put that baby to use!

In the winter months we host workshops that focus on your Winter Wellness over what can seem to be that never ending season we have here in Tassie. Lots of D.I.Y and honey and lemon at this class of course!

Shannon runs worskshops that focus on children and family. Her very popular Sensory Solutions class is perfect if you are looking to help your children naturally.

Natural cleaning alternatives are covered in the Essential Oils 101 and your mind will be blown at just how simple it is to clean your home without harsh chemicals. Your grandmother really did have it going on.

Our list of upcoming workshops is below and you can find the times and locations on our workshop calendar.

Everyone is welcome to attend. We do request you RSVP either via the facebook link or eventbrite so we can manage numbers.

Shannons Story - Sensory Solutions for Kids with Special Needs

One of the things I absolutely love about my job is connecting with people and hearing their life changing stories. Shannon‘s was no exception. We had previously met at school a few times during parent help ( this canteen at the school disco) but had never really had a conversation. Shannon came along to one of my workshops last year and I wanted to share her story with you.

44101688_2002959903329018_4952805764323344384_o.jpg

Hello, my name is Shannon and I am a mum of two wonderfully beautiful boys, Finn and Kohdi. When I met my husband we decided quite quickly to move in together, got engaged, went off the pill to try and fall pregnant and got married. The pregnancy happened quickly. The day we found out was the happiest of my life. This was all I had been longing for and (apart from meeting my husband) knew it would make my life complete. I also wished for a healthy baby AND a baby who did not have autism. I know that sounds like a horrific admission, but it’s true. Having witnessed other close families deal with autism, I really didn’t think I would ever cope if it happened to us.

My pregnancy was uneventful until Finn decided to arrive six weeks early. So, in actual fact, all of the above plus a birth happened within 1 year of meeting my husband! Finn weighed 4 pound 3 ounces – such a tiny boy. He was whisked off to the special care nursery and I was unable to hold him for the next four days which was incredibly hard. I tried expressing milk but it just would not come through. In the end I had a hungry baby so we had to give in to formula. I really struggled emotionally with not having milk but I had no other option. He had jaundice and was on CPAPS for 4 days. His weight was constantly measured and he didn’t seem to be progressing. But we were just besotted with our beautiful baby boy. Finn stayed in the special care nursery for 3 weeks before we were finally allowed to bring him home.

Fast forward to 4 years old, and it was time for Finn to start Kinder. I couldn’t wait to be a Kinder mum, to do the school drop off, pick up, parent help & P&F, I was all in! By the end of first term, I turned to Andrew in exasperation and said that I couldn’t do it anymore. Getting Finn to and from school (with another baby in tow – Kohdi), was a nightmare. I just knew in my heart something was not right with Finn.

So I gave Andrew a list of things that were bothering me which he googled – Sensory Processing Disorder came up. As we read the description it was Finn to a T. I couldn’t believe it! Finn hated socks, shoes, tags, tight clothing, seat belts, had regular meltdowns that could last for an hour or more. He had no awareness of what was in front of him and he kept tripping over. He absolutely hated things on his hands e.g. sand, paint, glue and had a high sensitivity to pain. The list went on and on.

We consulted with the kinder teacher and she monitored his progress then reported back to us, and yes, she agreed with our thoughts. The next step was to the GP to get a referral to a paediatrician. I was absolutely horrified with the referral letter from the GP – she had written that Finn had ‘autism spectrum disorder’ and ‘developmental delay’. That one word autism. There it was. Everything I had dreamed of my whole life was turning into my worst nightmare.

A few months later we were referred to another health service for occupational therapy. It was here on his first assessment that the therapist noticed that something was not quite right with his right leg. Further tests and assessments and other specialists revealed he had ‘mild diplegic cerebral palsy’. Gosh, what else could go wrong. Diplegic cerebral palsy (CP), also known as spastic diplegia. It is a form of cerebral palsy marked by tense muscles and spasms. Leg muscles in particular tend to be extremely tight, and over time, this causes joints to stiffen, reducing the range of motion. Diplegic CP is considered one of the milder forms of the disorder, and in most cases the child’s intelligence and cognitive functions are not severely affected, although they may take longer to reach intellectual milestones.

What are the causes of Diplegic Cerebral Palsy?

Neonatal asphyxia is the most common cause of diplegic CP, which generally happens when a newborn is deprived of oxygen during the delivery process. Infants born prematurely and with low birth weight have a heightened risk of developing diplegic CP as these babies are prone to oxygen problems during birth. This description rings true for me as two days prior to Finn’s birth, he had stopped moving. I consulted my midwife and she said if I was worried to go to the hospital to get checked out – but I didn’t. Two night s later, Finn was born.

So here we are, dealing with our beautiful first born who has Sensory Processing Disorder and mild Diplegic Cerebral Palsy – highly emotional and tight muscles. Moving ahead five years and Finn still has regular physio checkups. He was required to have botox injections in both his calves and casting (plaster on his lower legs) twice and over time and though education we have learned to manage his Sensory Processing Disorder but it continues to affect his life.

I began our Essential Oil journey in July 2018. I had always had an interest in Essential Oils and now being a parent I was keen to learn more on how these oils could enhance my boy’s health and wellness. To say they have had an impact would be an understatement. I started with the small bottle kit (Family Essentials) and a diffuser. My mission was to use these oils so that my boys would grow up healthy, happy and balanced. I particularly wanted to use them to soothe Finn’s emotions. I went oil-silly!

Every day these oils were used in some shape or form, it was like my boys were my experiments. Ice Blue has been fantastic for Finn’s tight calf muscles, Lavender and Frankincense to assist to calm him down, Digestzen to soothe his tummy upsets, and On Guard to support his immune system (he was sick a lot as a toddler).

In November, doTERRA released a Kids Collection, only available in the US. I could not wait to get it onto our home. We use it everyday and what I love about this collection it empowers Finn and Kohdi and helps them decide how they are feeling at the time, how they want to feel, therefore, to know which oil blend they need to use. It is a great little kit!

I have now completed further training and created my own workshop, Sensory Solutions for Kids with Special Needs that I am so pleased to share with other families. The workshop is based around oils to support kids (and their families) with special needs.

This further training has enhanced my own knowledge and my mission is to share this knowledge with many other families and I hope that they too, can benefit immensely from using essential oils.

Waste not want not

The other day my gorgeous bottle of Frankincense ran out.  Que very sad face.

Did you  know, when a bottle is empty there are still at least 10 drops on the sides you can’t get out just using the bottle the normal way? This oil is so precious you do not want to waste a drop!

So I popped out the dropper carefully with a butter knife blade and added 10 drops of Copaiba into the Frankincense bottle  and topped up with  Fractionated Coconut Oil.

I then added the special sized roller that fits the doTERRA 15ml bottles and I have myself a brand new Frankincense and Copaiba roller ready to go! I just saved a whole bunch of money and am now feeling quite pleased with myself that I didn't waste a single  drop of this precious oil. You can apply this trick with any oil that you can use topically. [ see below for a reminder on how to use essential oils topically] So far I using this hack I have made Lavender, Ice Blue and Digestzen Rollers that I would never have had. Please don't throw your bottles away  - there are so many great ideas on how to reuse on google and in chat groups.

What is your favorite oil bottle recycle trick? Please share in the comments below so we can all get more great ideas.

** To fit a roller top into a 15 ml doTERRA bottle you do need to purchase a special sized roller.

I purchased mine here

How to use Essential Oils Topically

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit.

Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways to increase absorption. Using a light massage will increase the blood flow to the area of application, in turn improving distribution throughout the body. Use of a carrier oil can also increase absorption, especially in skin that is dry or flaky as it helps moisturize the skin and slow evaporation of the oil.

To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.

It’s always advisable to use several small doses throughout the day rather than a single large dose. Start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops). A topical dose can be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed. Because every individual is unique, the dose will vary for each individual based on size, age, and overall health status.

Beneficial Areas You Can Apply Essential Oils

  • Neck
  • Forehead and temples
  • Chest and abdomen
  • Arms, legs, bottom of feet

Other Effective Methods of Topical Application

  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
  • Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area
  • Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to skin

Sensitive Areas to be Avoided:

  • Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes
  • Eyes and inner ears
  • Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

Neroli is life

A little while a go a friend sent me this blog post to read and it quite literally changed my life.  I had no idea I even had anxiety, I just figured I was stressed to almost breaking point every day and that was my normal.

A  nice way to live right?  Not so much.

After reading the blog post I promptly added Neroli to my next LRP order. When it arrived I had no expectations. I just thought I would give it a crack.  My absolute most stressful time of the day is between 7.30 and 8am. Trying to get the kids and myself ready, lunches, clothes on - clothes off - clothes on. Is dinner out? What are we even having? Where is your folder? You had homework, what? Why didn't you tell me!'  Come on, we have 5 minutes. Where are your shoes? Did you bring your jacket home? You get the idea. It usually involves a lot of yelling and sometimes words I am not proud of. I am definitely not my best person during this time. This was Neroli's first test. I rolled it on the back of my neck at 7.30am and then forgot about it. By 8am we were in the car, everyone dressed, all jobs done, no rushing and no tears. Just happy faces ready to face the day. What just happened?

I tried it a second time the next morning. It worked, again. You see, nothing had actually changed in the household. All the same jobs remained. The kids still were as slow as snails. Shoes were still lost but it was my reaction to the situation that changed. I was much calmer. No yelling. No frantic rushing. Just happily getting the household ready for the day. It was seriously incredible. The children were so much happier, I was happier, we had our mornings back.

Neroli now lives in my handbag and comes everywhere with me. She gets quite the work out in the office during the day and my colleagues often ask to borrow her. I gladly pass my lovely Neroli over as I know, I know she works.

Neroli comes in a 'touch' roller bottle which is already diluted and ready to go.  If you think you need Neroli in your life, contact me and I'll hook you up. B x
